Bell’s phenomenon: one of Allah’s countless miracles.
Our eyelids are moved with the help of facial nerve. If it is paralyzed, the eyelid cannot be closed fully. Result? A partially opened eye, day n night, with risks of infection to cornea (the center 'screen' through which we all see), often leading to it's opacification, even loss of vision.
Facial (nerve) paralysis, called as Bell's paralysis, ('laqva' لقوہ in Urdu) is quite common, usually recovers naturally, but may take weeks or months. Now, during this period if cornea is constantly exposed, imagine how many eyes will lose sight! But..... SubhanAllah, the Creator has provided an automatic mechanism to protect the cornea, and hence vision. It's called Bell's phenomenon. So when facial nerve is paralyzed, on closing the eyes the eyeball automatically rolls upwards thereby 'shielding' the cornea beneath the upper eyelid!! SubhanAllah! Alhamdolillah!! Allah o Akbar!!! How ingenious, how caring, how merciful is the Creator, that He still protects us even when He takes away one of His blessings. SubhanAllah! Alhamdolillah!! Allah o Akbar!!! How ingenious, how caring, how merciful is the Creator, that He still protects us even when He takes away one of His blessings. SubhanAllah! Alhamdolillah!! Allah o Akbar!!! In every apparent loss, there is a mercy, often not obvious to us. It's us, the humans who fail to identify it.
